Does Hot & Humid Mean Healthy? What You Need to Know About Humidity and Your Skin
With a tropical paradise comes endless heat and humid weather. Our beautiful South Florida has lush greenery and gorgeous beaches, but it’s not a great place if you hate frizzy hair and hot winters. On top of that, the high levels of humidity here can even affect your skin.
The Pros & Cons of Humidity
What even is humidity? Put simply, humidity is how much water vapor (water in its gaseous form) is in the air. A “humid climate” indicates that a particular environment contains more moisture in the air than most other environments. Tropical regions are often more humid, including places like our very own South Florida! Specifically, April to August are some of the most humid and hot days of the year for us. But what does humidity have to do with our skin?
If the levels of humidity in the air are balanced, your skin will be more balanced too. Too much humidity and too little humidity can help your skin or hurt it, depending on your natural skin type. If you are living in places (or even just visiting those places temporarily) with too low humidity levels, your skin is likely to feel drier than normal. However, your skin might become more acne-prone and develop irritation if you live or visit places with high humidity levels.
Ultimately, the level of moisture in the air affects the level of moisture in your skin. High humidity can lead your skin to develop bacterial infections or cause problems with your sweat glands, as hot and humid weather makes you sweat more. This is because the humidity will “open” your pores more and make them more susceptible to dirt, oil, and allergens. This can further acne, infections, rashes, and other skin irritations. If you naturally have oily or acne-prone skin, areas with high humidity can cause these issues.
However, those with naturally dry skin can see benefits from high levels of humidity. Because more moisture is in the air, your skin will feel more hydrated and retain moisture more effectively. People who are prone to skin allergies often find that more arid climates make their symptoms worse.
How to Help Your Skin
If you struggle with dry skin because of your environment, hydrating and moisturizing your skin is necessary. We recommend applying serums and following up with a thick moisturizer to put back that water into your skin. Check out our online shop for our favorite moisturizing products.
To fight off any acne that may occur as a result of excessive humidity and sweating, you need to find the best facial cleanser for breakouts, as well as other products like serums, masks, and moisturizers that work for your skin type. We highly recommend proven acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide (BP).
We consider our Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Wash 5% one of the best facial cleansers for breakouts. It provides antibacterial properties against Propionibacterium acnes. This powerful acne-fighting treatment dries up pimples and blemishes while keeping the skin’s moisture and pH levels at the normal level to keep future blemishes from forming.
This gel wash thoroughly cleanses acne-prone skin with a unique soap-free formula, so it doesn’t contribute to drying out your skin like other facial cleansers with benzoyl peroxide. BP is a naturally drying ingredient, so choosing an aggressive cleanser can dry out your skin even more.
Another benzoyl peroxide product we recommend for acne is the “Spot On” Benzoyl Peroxide USP 5% Gel. It’s the perfect spot treatment that utilizes the antibacterial properties of Benzoyl Peroxide USP to help clear existing blemishes and prevent future blemishes from forming. Unlike the facial cleanser with benzoyl peroxide, this is a treatment meant for smaller areas of the face, like the angry zit you feel coming on.
We also have acne-fighting products without benzoyl peroxide, like the Papaya Enzyme Peel from Doctor’s Daughter. The papaya enzyme peel is a super-formula that exfoliates, nourishes, and restores your skin’s natural barrier.
Packed with the powerful ingredient, papain enzyme, this treatment increases epithelial turnover while preventing signs of aging and ironing out uneven skin tone and texture. Gentle enough to be non-irritating yet powerful enough to leave you with refreshed skin after each use, this peel is essential to a clear and glowing complexion.
