Summer Skin: Protect & Hydrate Your Skin with These Products
Glowing summer skin is only two steps away! Check out some of our favorite lightweight moisturizers and SPF/sunscreen products that are perfect for these upcoming months.
Step 1: Hydrate
Moisturizing your skin is always important, even in the hot and humid months. You may be tempted to skip moisturizer after washing your face, but don’t make that mistake! No matter the temperature, washing your face strips your skin of its natural moisture barrier, composed of lipids that your skin produces on its own.
When you strip these lipids, you leave your skin drier and more vulnerable to environmental factors. Without properly hydrating your skin, you’re also more likely to develop acne and dry, flakey patches on your face. If you’re afraid that your winter moisturizer will be too heavy for the summer, opt for a more lightweight lotion.
Water-based moisturizers will sink into your skin and leave it feeling refreshed and hydrated throughout the day, not greasy and sticky. Our Ultra Lite Moisture Dew is a sheer, oil-free, non-comedogenic cream that combines the purest form of aloe vera with high-performance hydrators, glycerin, and squalane to soothe skin and help restore its natural moisture balance. This elegant lightweight moisturizer is ideal for all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin.
Want something more luxuriously moisturizing? The Lipid Replenishing Cream is a great summer option for those with dry skin. This restorative, soft cream is formulated to balance the skin’s natural moisture levels, resulting in a healthy skin barrier. This moisturizer is infused with a proprietary blend of squalane, cholesterol, and ceramides.
A cream like this will give you a youthful, glowing appearance with its collagen-boosting technology. This moisturizer provides stand-alone therapeutic benefits when you apply it to your skin post-procedure. Whichever moisturizer you choose, both include the unique ingredient, squalane, which has risen in popularity recently.
What the Heck is Squalane?
A hydrogenated version of squalene, squalane is a more shelf-stable ingredient, often preferred by chemists that formulate skincare products. Because squalane is an emollient, it can squeeze into the spaces between skin cells and make your face feel smoother. It’s a popular ingredient in moisturizers, serums, and facial oils for this reason.
Emollients help keep moisture in your face by sealing that outer layer, but many common emollients can clog pores if they are too heavy and occlusive for your skin. For example, if you have oily skin, you probably stay away from moisturizers that contain high amounts of cocoa butter or coconut oil, as those ingredients will likely clog your pores.
Squalane has a weightless feel on the skin and won’t clog your pores while still nourishing your skin. According to our Miami dermatologist, Dr. Deborah Longwill, “…plant-based squalane…locks in hydration for the skin.” Squalane is a popular summer ingredient for a reason—it’s great for oily skin and won’t break you out!
Step 2: Protect
Arguably the most important step of the two, protecting your skin with sunscreen every day is a must this summer. Along with wearing sunglasses, hats, and limiting your time in the Sun, you should wear at least SPF 30 on your face, hands, and neck every day. This will minimize UV damage (a cause of skin cancer) and prevent signs of aging, such as dark spots, fine lines, dullness, etc.
If you wear makeup regularly, we recommend opting for a tinted sunscreen and reapplying throughout the day with an SPF mineral powder. The Essential Defense Mineral Shield™ product is a tinted sunscreen with Broad-Spectrum SPF 32. It delivers a natural tint in a lightweight formula. It goes on smoothly and helps visibly even your skin tone for a natural finish.
While it’s infused with age-defying ingredients, it’s gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin types. These sunscreen ingredients include vitamin E, caffeine, niacinamide, herbal extracts, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and dimethicone. Because SPF degrades over time, it’s important that you reapply SPF every few hours.
Our Green Tea Mattifying Mineral Powder is SPF 30 and is great for minimizing oiliness and maximizing sun protection. This gentle, non-nano, sweat-resistant formula combines antioxidant protection and mattifying oil control to help skin look naturally flawless. Its light-translucent color blends in sheer with most skin tones, concealing minor imperfections.
One of the sunscreen ingredients of this powder is green tea, a tried and true antioxidant we love to use in our custom skincare products. While SPF 30 is great for everyday wear, you’ll likely go to the pool or the beach more often this summer. For this, we recommend wearing SPF 50 sunscreen or higher, especially in sunny Miami. Reapply your SPF 50 sunscreen more vigorously and more often when you’re directly out in the Sun.
