Modern aesthetic care is no longer just about what you apply to your skin. Today’s patient expects natural-looking results that are well-balanced and long-lasting. Achieving these results requires more than applying a product or completing a single treatment. It requires a deeper understanding of how your skin truly works.

Your body’s production of collagen, your inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and the strength of your skin’s natural barriers are all at work in the aging process and in the healing response after your aesthetic treatment. These processes aren’t fully addressed by what you apply to your skin alone. They are also influenced by what’s happening inside your body.

At Dr. Longwill Skincare, we take a comprehensive approach to aesthetic care with our team of medical professionals. We’ve intentionally designed our space to feel peaceful, refined, and supportive of your overall experience. Most importantly, we consider what’s happening inside your body and how it may affect your results.

How to Safely Integrate Supplements

Adding a dietary supplement should never be done randomly. It should begin with a clear understanding of your current health.

At Dr. Longwill Skincare, we begin with a comprehensive consultation. We review your skin concerns, treatment history, lifestyle, and wellness goals. If needed, we encourage patients to speak with their primary care physician before taking new vitamins and supplements. We do not offer medical care or advice out of scope, but we are involved in helping patients understand how internal health can support aesthetic results.

Quality matters. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate supplements as strictly as prescription medications. For that reason, choosing third-party tested products is important. Look for certifications such as USP or NSF, which indicate compliance with dietary supplement standards.

Supplement labels should be clear about the product ingredients, serving size, and whether it is vegetarian or vegan. Be wary of exaggerated claims. Supplements can help support general and immune health. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.

Key Vitamins and Minerals That Support Skin Health

If you’re investing in professional skin treatments, it also makes sense to support your skin from within. Some supplements help boost collagen, reduce inflammation, strengthen your skin’s natural barrier, and support healing after procedures.

This isn’t about taking random vitamins and hoping for the best. Instead, it’s about using nutrients that support how your skin functions and responds to treatment.

Some of the most promising ones include:

1. Vitamin C to Produce Collagen

You probably use vitamin C as a topical treatment. Taking it as a supplement may provide additional benefits. Your body requires it to make collagen at all layers in your skin, not just the surface layers.

Health professionals usually recommend 75 – 90 mg a day for adults. Choose quality-tested brands. Look for supplements that contain bioflavonoids for better absorption.

2. Vitamin E as an Antioxidant

This vitamin works with vitamin C in a synergistic way, protecting cell membranes from oxidative stress. It’s stored in the skin’s natural oils, where it helps defend against environmental damage.

While many multivitamins contain vitamin E, a separate supplement may provide higher levels if you’re experiencing excessive dryness or sun damage.

3. Vitamin D for Barrier Protection

Many people are deficient in vitamin D, especially if they avoid sun exposure. Vitamin D supports the growth and repair of skin cells. If you are experiencing eczema or chronic barrier dysfunction, ask your doctor to check your levels.

Supplementation can improve how your skin responds to topical treatments.

4. B12 for Cell Turnover

Vitamin B12 supports healthy cell division, which affects how quickly your skin renews itself. Deficiency can result in hyperpigmentation and other skin problems.

This is especially relevant for older adults and those who follow vegetarian or vegan diets, as B12 is mainly contained in animal products.

5. Zinc for Healing

Zinc supports wound healing, reduces inflammation, and helps regulate oil production. If you have trouble with acne or your skin heals slowly, then zinc supplementation may help.

Look for forms of zinc picolinate or zinc glycinate for better absorption. The mineral also maintains general immune health, with indirect consequences on skin condition.

6. Magnesium for Stress Response

Magnesium helps regulate cortisol, the stress hormone linked to breakouts and accelerated aging. Magnesium glycinate is generally preferred because it’s gentle on the digestive system and well absorbed.

7. Omega-3 Fatty Acids & Zinc

Chronic low-grade inflammation can accelerate aging, worsen acne and rosacea, and slow healing after procedures.

EPA & DHA in fish oil help regulate the inflammatory response pathways. When the inflammatory response is well-managed, the skin responds better to treatments and is less reactive.

Omega-3 fatty acids are particularly useful in the following conditions:

  • Patients with rosacea
  • Acne patients with inflammatory breakouts
  • Patients who will be undergoing laser/resurfacing treatments
  • Patients who wish to address premature aging
  • Third-party tested products with clear labeling of EPA & DHA content should be used.

Zinc is involved in the process of tissue repair and immune modulation. It plays an essential role in the process of wound healing post-aesthetic procedures.

Zinc also regulates the sebaceous glands. Therefore, it is useful in patients with acne. Patients who experience slow healing after procedures or frequent inflammatory breakouts may consider zinc supplementation.

Creating a Comprehensive Integration Plan

At Dr. Longwill Skincare, we understand that the best results come from taking a big-picture approach. Skin health and overall wellness are closely connected.  We don’t limit care to one product or one treatment alone.

A comprehensive plan can include personalized in-office treatments, quality skincare products, advice on specific vitamins and supplements, as well as coordination with other healthcare practitioners if necessary. It also includes a thoughtfully designed environment that reflects our commitment to quality and patient care.

Supplements should be used intentionally and tailored to your individual needs. They are not a shortcut to better skin.

If you are considering adding vitamins and supplements to your skin care routine, it is recommended that you start with a professional assessment. At Dr. Longwill Skincare, we can help determine which supplements may support your skin health and which may not be appropriate for you.
